WHL Preseason Tourney - Day Two, plus a Day 1 wrap up (Kinda)

I sidetracked myself for a couple of hours by watching a mindless movie and catching up on episodes of "Dark Blue." But the clock is ticking down the minutes until today's big day of WHL hockey at Comcast Arena and it's time to get moving!
Last night's Silvertips/Tri City game was so much fun! And it was great to see the guys out on the ice, to be reminded again just how speedy Zack Dailey is, just how smooth Shane Harper looks as he homes in on the action, just how smart Kellan Tochkin is, as he scopes out the puck and makes play after play to help give the 'Tips scoring chances. Dale Hunt also played a big factor, as did Cameron Abney. And let us not forget Kent Simpson in goal.
I like the Tri City Americans, even more so since I became friends with several Amerks fans, but I have to say that Everett pretty much owned the game last night. They scored early and often. Alex Poulter and Kellan Tochkin scored in the first. Shane Harper teamed up with Dale Hunt and Zack Dailey to score in the second. Hunt and Harper teamed up again for the 'Tips third goal - this time, Hunt scored while Harper assisted. Ryan Murray also helped with that goal.
Everett went into the third period up 4-0, but Tri City kept young goalie Drew Owsley in net. He started showing more confidence and made several key saves in the final 15 minutes. The rest of the Amerks started showing more confidence, too, playing more aggressively and following through on hits and stops.With about 7 and a half minutes left to play, Tri City finally score, right after Alex Theriau went to the box for roughing. Tochkin was already serving an interference penalty, and Adam Hughesman was also cooling his heels on a hooking call. I think Drydn Dow got the goal. It was too loud and I couldn't hear the announcer. I'll have to double check. The pushing and shoving got worse after this and the refs had to move quickly to keep several scrums from turning into fights.
Tri City scored one more time, with 32 seconds left in regulation. Jordan Messier found a chink in Kent Simpson's armor to bring the Amerks to within two. Adam Hughesman got the assist. But for the Americans, it was a case of "too little, too late". Final score: Everett 4, Tri City 2.
Today's action pits Prince George against Portland at 11:30am, followed by Tri City v. Spokane at 3pm and tonights marquee matchup: the Silvertips v. the T-Birds at 7. I hope more fans turn out for today's action than yesterday's games. That freakin' goal horn is unbearable when the crowd is so sparse. Every time the 'Tips scored, I wanted to break things because of that damn thing.
Well, my coffee is almost gone and so is my breakfast. It's now 10:09am and I need to get ready to trek to Everett. And today, there will be NO hockey fashion faux pas for this girl. I'm giving up trying to find a shirt that doesn't make me look as though I'm playing favorites. I'm wearing my HUNTSVILLE HAVOC jersey for today's action. There are no SPHL teams anywhere near the Washington state line, so I think I'm pretty safe. Of course, their colors ARE red, black and white, but if people can't read the "Huntsville Havoc" logo on the front, then let them think I'm there to cheer for Prince George or Portland. You and I know the truth.

HELLO, HOCKEY! WE'VE MISSED YOU!
It's 5:31pm and I should be whipping up dinner for the boy and then taking my tired self to bed, after working my usual overnight shift at the TV station. Instead, I'm chugging a Cherry Coke Zero and picking out a top that is NOT red, black or blue, to go with my jeans. At 7pm, I shall be firmly ensconced inside Comcast Arena, letting the chill air seep into my bones but not feeling it when the Silvertips take to the ice and face off against the Tri City Americans in glorious pre-season action!
My hockey fix actually came a little earlier today, when I made it to the Cable Box to catch the 2nd and 3rd periods of the T-Birds/Prince George match up. My laptop died with a minute to go in the 2nd period and my BlackBerry threatened to die shortly after, but I managed to scribble enough notes in my notebook to add to the wrapup I write this weekend.
The T-Birds played fairly well, although I could see a few of the newer boys struggle here and there. It was nice to see some familiar faces (err... names) out there and even nicer to see Lindsay Nielsen sporting a "C" on his jersey. I'm not sure if Coach Sumner has made the decision permanent, but I can't think of a better person to don the mantel left by Thomas Hickey. Neely has some big shoes to fill, but he can definitely do it. I hope Coach leaves that "C" on Neely's chest.
I saw a couple of players sporting "A's": Sena Acolatse, Jeremy Schappert and Steve Chaffin. Again, I agree with these choices and hope the "A's" remain. The returning players I saw played fairly well, especially Jonathan Parker, who had a goal and at least one assist in the 3-2 victory. Did not see Calvin Pickard on the bench. Instead, Jake DeSerres and Kyle Jahraus split the net duties. I hope Picks is having a well-deserved rest and not nursing an injury or something horrible like that.
I missed today's second game between Spokane and Portland because of Mommy duties. And since the Hubby has to work late tonight, I bought Ian a ticket to tonight's game and am taking him with me. (He's making sure his PSP is charged). He informed me, "I like hockey, but not THIS kind of hockey." Oh-kaaay. I don't know what other kind of hockey there is to like. He explained, if Luongo isn't in net, he's not interested. Oh, my little Canuck. I told him that one of the Silvertips (Kellan Tochkin) was actually signed by Vancouver and is going to training camp. He doesn't care. "If he's not on the team yet, he's not a Canuck." Ouch. Harshness as only a 15 year old can deliver it.
Well, It's now 5:47pm and I still need to find a shirt that does not make me look like a Tri City fan (sorry, my Amerk friends- you know it's not personal). I didn't think about the color of the clothes I chose for work and drove to Everett dressed in black pants, red tank top and white shirt. Yeah. I sat amongst T-Bird fans looking like I was cheering on Prince George. #FAIL. And as my friend M. Jarred pointed out, they're also the Portland Winterhawk colors and mentioned that that would constitute #DOUBLE FAIL.
I think one #DOUBLE FAIL hockey fashion faux pas today is enough.

A great weekend of hockey gets underway at Comcast Arena today (Friday, September 4).
It's your chance to see six WHL teams under one roof. The Everett Silvertips are hosting a pre-season tournament featuring the Seattle Thunderbirds, Portland WinterHawks, Tri City Americans, Spokane Chiefs and Prince George Cougars.
The action gets underway at 11:30 in the morning, when the T-Birds face off against Prince George. Here's a look at the complete schedule:
