WHL: Recap: T-Birds v. Silvertips 11/14

The Everett Silvertips rode a 2 game winning streak into Saturday’s game against I-5 rivals the Seattle Thunderbirds.  The Silvertips currently sit smack in the middle of the WHL’s US Division with a 12-6 record.  The T-Birds have struggled so far this season; their 7-12 record landing them at the bottom of the US Division. Still, Seattle also rode a 2 game winning streak heading into Comcast Arena.  Anyone who’s ever seen these two teams face each other, knows that records don’t count.  They will hit the ice and give everything they have to beat the other team. There is absolutely no love lost between the Silvertips and T-Birds.  On this night, Everett put Kent Simpson in net, while Seattle featured 17-year-old phenom Calvin Pickard.  And on this night, Pickard would prevail.
The first period featured a lot of action on both sides of the ice, with both goaltenders deflecting some pretty strong shots.  The first also featured a number of penalties, ranging from holding to unsportsmanlike conduct, but the clock ran down with a scoreless tie and the shots on goal fairly even – Everett 9, Seattle 11.
The second period began with the T-Birds on the power play, as Silvertips center Chris Langkow sat in the box for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at the close of the first period. Everett killed that penalty and went on the power play about 4 minutes into the period, when T-Bird d-man Steve Chaffin was called for holding. Just before that penalty ran out, Seattle’s Brenden Rouse drove up the ice and scored a shorthanded goal, with a little help from Silvertips goaltender Kent Simpson.  Simpson tried to stop the puck and accidentally slid it past him into the net.  The T-Birds scored again, on a power play at the 9:15 mark.  Right wing Sena Acolatse shot the puck past Kent Simpson.  Colin Jacobs and Brenden Rouse got the assists. About halfway through the 2nd period, Jacobs dropped the gloves with Silvertips forward Kellan Tochkin and both of them went to the box. Jacobs got a 5 minute major for fighting, but the refs slapped Tochkin with 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting and a 10 minute misconduct.  He would not return until well into the 3rd period. Not even a minute after the fight, the T-Birds struck again. Captain Lindsay Nielsen found the net, on a shot from Charles Wells and Jeremy Schappert.  There was more chippiness as little scraps broke out on the ice. In a move reminiscent of former T-Birds Captain (and current Manchester Monarch) Thomas Hickey, Radko Gudas, Everett’s big D-man, laid a hip check on T-Birds forward Prab Rai that sent Rai airborne. Luke Lockhart was called for hooking with 52 seconds left in the 2nd, and as the horn sounded, the T-Birds’ Stefan Warg and ‘Tips’ Chris Langkow went at it.  Neither was called for a penalty and the two teams hit the locker room with Seattle up 3-0.
The Silvertips turned their aggressiveness up another notch as the third period got underway, driving again and again at the T-Birds’ net and outscoring Seattle 8-3 in the first 8 minutes of the final period. Again and again, Calvin Pickard turned them away, with help from his teammates.  Everett seemed to put Seattle on its heels, but the T-Birds regrouped and basically ran out the clock for most of the period.  With three minutes to go, Seattle scored again. Jonathan Parker put one past Kent Simpson. Sena Acolatse and Brenden Rouse got the assists.  The Silvertips turned up the jets again in the final 3 minutes of the game, but could not find a chink in Pickard’s armor.  Time ran out, giving Seattle a 4-0 victory and Pickard his second shutout of the season.  The 3 Stars of the Game:  3. Radko Gudas (Everett D-man); 2. Calvin Pickard (Seattle goaltender); 1. Prab Rai (Seattle LW).

Silvertips: Interviews, promos, etc.

Zack Dailey, Shane Harper, Paul Sohor (Photo: Su Ring)

The Everett Silvertips kept a pretty high profile on KING 5 this week. RW Kellan Tochkin traded his uniform for a snazzy black suit to hang out with Sports anchor Paul Silvi on NorthWest Sports Tonight. They chatted about everything from Kellan's new contract with the Vancouver Canucks (youngest player in Silvertips history to sign a pro contract), new 'Tips Head Coach Craig Hartsburg and the new season.  If you missed it, don't worry. I've posted the entire segment online. All you have to do is click right here to see it.  I'll say this about Kellan: he gives a great interview. Need proof? Click here to read his first interview with the KING 5 Hockey page early last season.  Click here to read the interview he did just after signing his Canucks contract.

Also, this week, we aired a promo video we shot with Silvertips fans, mascot Lincoln, PR guy Jon Rosen, and players Zack Dailey, Shane Harper and Paul Sohor.  Photographer Jim Scott had a blast shooting and editing the piece, and as you can see by clicking here, the anchors had a great time watching it.  I hope you do, too.

As with any story that airs on TV, we don't use an entire interview.  So, I edited the interviews with Zack, Shane and Paul together and posted that online, too.  Click here to see what else they had to say!

Silvertips Slay Giants in Vancouver

Photo: Kelly Shelton/Everett Silvertips

The Everett Silvertips headed into Vancouver last night, stinging from three losses in a row, including a 7-2 whipping at the hands of the Spokane Chiefs Wednesday night. The ‘Tips were ready to take their frustrations out on someone, and the Vancouver Giants just happened to land in their sights. The Silvertips also had a little payback in mind for the Giants, as the last two times the teams faced each other, Vancouver shut Everett out, 8-0 and 3-0.

The Silvertips definitely had what it took to take down the Western Conference leading Giants. Tyler Parker got the scoring started for Everett in the final five minutes of the first period. Well, Parker’s skate actually did the trick, as a pass from Jesse Burt deflected off his skate and went into the net. Cameron Abney was also credited with an assist on this goal. Two minutes later, Tyler Maxwell notched Everett’s second goal, with help from WHL Rookie leading scorer Kellan Tochkin. The first period ended with Everett up 2-0.

Vancouver came roaring back in the second period. Brendan Gallagher put the Giants on the board just 2 minutes into the period, on a shorthanded goal with help from Brent Regner and Nick Ross. They scored again six minutes later on a power play, when Evander Kane got past ‘Tips goalie Thomas Heemskerk. Craig Shira and Casey Pierro-Zabotel were credited with the assists. The second period ended with things all tied up at 2-2.

The third period saw Vancouver take the lead just 36 seconds in. Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored, with help from Evander Kane and Craig Cunningham. But the Silvertips were not going to be denied on this night. Kellan Tochkin scored about 4 minutes in, taking a pass from Tyler Maxwell and shooting the puck past Giants goalie Tyson Sexsmith. Nearly two minutes later, Everett took the lead, as Byron Froese scored a power play goal, with help from Kellan Tochkin and Taylor Ellington. Shane Harper scored with just under two minutes left in regulation, putting the Silvertips up 5-3. Daniel Bartek got the assist.

Silvertips goalie Thomas Heemskerk stopped 40 shots for his 16th win of the season. Everett won a decisive game, scoring 5 goals in only 16 shots on Vancouver’s goal.

The Silvertips hope to ride this turnaround back into Comcast Arena tonight, where they face the Chilliwack Bruins for Fan Appreciation Night. The puck drops at 7:05 and tickets are still available. Click here for more information.

Everett closes out the regular season tomorrow at ShoWare Center in Kent, against cross-town rivals the Seattle Thunderbirds. Everett won the last match-up between the two teams at ShoWare on March 1st, in an exciting game that went to a shootout. Shane Harper scored the shootout winner. Tomorrow’s game starts at 5:05. Click here for more information.

If you can’t make it to Everett or Kent to see the ‘Tips in action tonight and tomorrow night, you can listen on the radio. Just tune to 1380AM KRKO for all the exciting play by play action.

I hope you enjoy reading these- all the guys have great things to say.
I am now working on a feature about music that's played at hockey games.
A number of NHL, AHL and WHL teams' music directors are taking part, so it should be fun.
I'll post an update when that story is up.

Till then, have a great week!
